Howdy folks! My new single “Bless the Telephone” is out today!
This song was written and originally performed by Labi Siffre, an openly gay singer, songwriter, and poet. Labi is a trailblazer for openly gay and queer performers like myself and it is an honour and privilege to share my interpretation of this beautiful song.
As someone who has often uttered the phrase “I hate my phone” in recent years, this song reminds me of the blessing that this essential mode of communication brings us. The phone has turned into a bleak, dystopian nightmare-machine that is constantly inundating us with brainrot social media, terrible news, subscriptions, and the neverending sea of emails and text messages that blur the lines of our social and work lives. But this song pulls into focus the beauty that is hearing the voice of the person you love when you are apart from one another.
After meeting my husband and falling deeply in love, we had to spend almost two years living in different countries, spending weeks and months apart. It was a pain and torment I can’t even begin to put into words. However, we got through those long, dark stretches separated from one another knowing we were only ever a phone call away from each other. So, when I first heard this song about a year ago, I immediately felt a deep connection with it. After all, what is more human than wanting to hear the voice of the person you love most?
With that said, I want to dedicate this song to the love of my life, Micah Herron.
Huge thanks to the amazingly talented Ivan Rosenberg for his hard work recording, mixing, co-producing, and co-mastering this song. Thank you to Mark Westberg for co-mastering and to Rey Nemati for the cover art photo. Lastly, thank you to Jaymie Karn for always being my biggest cheerleader and supporting me every step of the way in this new creative journey 💕💕💕
